New: The DUO add-ons are here!

Dear reef aquarists,

In our analyzes we often find a lack of nutrients, which can promote problems in coral maintenance and unwanted cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates.

To respond to this situation, we have theDeveloped Oceamo DUO add-ons nitrogen and phosphorus. The add-ons are packed in a practical dosing syringe,  and are supplied with the supply solutionsDUOmixed according to instructions. This ensures a constant supply of these important nutrients.

In addition, a barium source can be added to the DUO with the "Add-On Barium".

With the add-ons,  DUO flexibly and is supplemented by the possibility of nitrogen, phosphorus or barium dosing. And that simply by adding it to the respective DUO canister or bottle. Very effective and easy to use

New:35.0 ppt salinity reference for refractometers

Our salinity reference solution for calibrating refractometers is now available!

A stable (and correct) salinity is an important basis for successful reef aquaristics. However, we often observe in our laboratory analyzes that the salinity value deviates significantly from the optimal value. In order to guarantee correct salinity in the reef aquarium, the measuring equipment should be constantly checked and calibrated.

The packaging makes our 35.0 psu reference solution very easy to handle, extremely productive and also very well protected from environmental influences (contamination, evaporation...), which means that the salinity value remains stable for a long time.

The reference is inOceamo online store, as well as in specialist shops available

On the trail of (track) elements in lining

Which trace elements are contained in what quantity in feed? How much phosphorus is introduced by feeding? Is the supply of trace elements from feeding sufficient? Are there critical enrichments?

To answer these questions, we acid digested (dissolved) common foods for fish (and corals) and analyzed them using ICP-OES.

From now on we will tooLanthanum measured

Together with phosphate, lanthanum forms sparingly soluble salts (lanthanum phosphate), which is why this element is used as a liquid “phosphate adsorber” in aquaristics. The phosphate is precipitated with lanthanum chloride: the resulting solid sediments - or is removed from the water cycle by filtration (or skimming if necessary).

However, caution is required because

  1. the phosphate content can be reduced very quickly with lanthanum, which can damage corals

  2. If the phosphate is not completely removed from the tank, re-release through microbiological activity is therefore conceivable

  3. Effects on various living beings were found when using lanthanum-based products: In some cases, turbellarians died (as a desired side effect), but there were also reports of symptoms of poisoning in fish. Possible reasons are a direct toxicity of lanthanum as well as secondary effects caused by the finely precipitating lanthanum phosphate.

In the Oceamo laboratory, we are now also determining lanthanum in your water samples in addition to the previous parameters. We measure this element using ICP-OES, with which we can reliably detect concentrations greater than 3 µg/l. Ideally, lanthanum cannot be detected in a seawater aquarium. A detection of lanthanum is a clear indication of a poor availability of phosphate and thus a clear warning sign. In this case, liquid "adsorbers" (as well as other phosphate-binding measures) should be suspended. Click here for the Oceamo Classic seawater analysis

How are "droplet tests" for nitrate affected by nitrite?

Again and again we read that test kits for nitrate are influenced by nitrite. From our measurements we know that nitrite occurs in almost all seawater tanks in a concentration of 0.05-0.1 mg/l. - Reason enough to take a closer look at this issue.

Standard solutions for nitrate and nitrite were used for our test, as well as a commercially available, frequently used nitrate test kit. Different samples were produced that only contained nitrite (0.05, 0.1, 1 mg/l) or only nitrate (2, 5, 10 mg/l), as well as a mixed sample with nitrite and nitrate.

You can see the result of our test here:

The result is quite clear, 0.05 mg/l nitrite simulate a value of 2 mg/l in this nitrate test, 0.1 mg/l nitrite show an incorrect nitrate value of 5 mg/l . This is particularly interesting for aquarists who want to keep their tanks low in nutrients but still want to keep nitrate in the detectable range.

Why do the nitrate tests react to nitrite (for chemistry geeks only)?: Nitrate is difficult to measure "directly", which is why the test sets take a detour: The nitrate is (partly) converted (reduced) to nitrite. In the acidic environment, the nitrite then forms a diazonium salt, which enters into an azo coupling with a suitable coupling partner. This creates an azo dye, which causes the pink color. Any nitrite that is already present can react immediately to form an azo dye and simulate a higher nitrate value.

In our laboratory we measure nitrite and nitrate using ion chromatography:The anions (including nitrate and nitrite as well as fluoride, chloride, bromide and sulfate) are separated on an anion separation column. Then these analytes migrate "individually" past sensitive detectors (we use a conductivity detector and an additional UV detector, since this is the only way to determine nitrite and nitrate with a low detection limit). This enables an unaffected nitrate measurement, even if there is a lot of nitrite in the water.
